On December 9, 1863 Borys Grinchenko was born. He was the author of fundamental ethnographic, linguistic, literary, pedagogical works, historical essays, the first textbooks on the Ukrainian language and literature, the compiler of the four-volume explanatory “Dictionary of the Ukrainian language”.

Among the great Ukrainians, Borys Grinchenko has a special place. His life and work are astonishing, his tireless titanic activity is admirable for more than one generation of Ukrainians. Fate measured out to him a short Shevchenko's age - 47 years. In his life and work, every single step was sanctified by love for his native people.
